Homeowner Gets Extreme Makeover

A new twist on the old saying "while the cat's away, the mice will play." Denise Conley got more than she bargained for when she applied for new windows for her Omaha home. Conley got an extreme makeover in more ways than one.

Conley is queen for more than a day with a trip to Faces Day Spa. "The massage and the facial and everything," Denise said. "I think I snored twice." But while the queen's away, her castle is under siege.

That's where 53 workers are in the midst of an extreme makeover. Kristine Stout of MAXX Properties explains why Denise was selected for both extreme makeovers.

"She has been through many surgeries and she didn't have the mobility or the resources to be able to put into the house like she was able to when she was working full time. She deserves it, she has been taking care of her two grandsons since birth and so she deserves to go get pampered a little bit."

Steve Cinnamon of Rebuilding Together Omaha said there were a lot of problems with the house at 41st and Spaulding. "In one room you could basically see to the outside because of the cracks in the wall. Gutters were not in place, we got stumps, we got sheds, we got trees. They brought in skilled craftsmen to do a lot of work that the home owner can't afford that needs to get done."

Workers are landscaping, replacing doors, lighting fixtures, windows, ceilings and more. "Mrs. Conley just so deserved this project," Stout said. "I mean she needed a lot of help and a lot of TLC to her home and so the vendors stepped up, our employees stepped up and doing anything and everything."

Meanwhile, back at the spa, Denise appreciates her good fortune. "I cried, that's all I could do. I was planning whenever I hit the lottery, I was going to do some major work on my home. I've been blessed with so many people looking after me and my grandsons."

Rebuilding Together Omaha takes on projects east of 52nd Street. Homeowners must be over 62 years old or disabled to qualify for their programs.
