Hitchcock Nature Center To Give Tour Through Loess Hills

The Hitchcock Nature Center is giving guided hiking tours through the Loess Hills. This hike will be new for most because this area is not normally open to the public. Hikers will get to learn more about the plants, animals and history of the prairie.

The hike takes place Tuesday, May 21st at 7 p.m. as part of the first Hitch Hike series. Visitors will hike along a Loess Hills ridge top through scenic prairie to reach the McIntosh Pioneer Cemetery, founded in 1874. This trail is only accessible with a PCCB staff member and is not considered open to the public. Enjoy the spring wildflowers of the prairie including blue-eyed grass, puccoons and locoweed.

The public is invited to attend all the hikes in the series. They are designed to introduce visitors to Hitchcock Nature Center as well as the Loess Hills. The series will start with a more moderate trail and work towards a healthy, invigorating 2.5 mile hike to the most western edge of the preserve at the series’ end. Bring your water bottle and join in the fun. Cost: $2.00 per person. Weather permitting.
