Lusco Farms animal rescue in Malvern, Iowa told Channel 6 News Sunday new homes have been found for four donkeys we first reported about last month.

Scott Shehan had been working with Sweet T. "It just takes patience with them. I might have to do this three or four weeks before she quits turning her back to me."

Sweet T was one of the donkeys rescued and brought to Lusco Farms. She came from a farm in Nebraska. After the owner died, the family turned Sweet T and other donkeys over to the rescue. "We couldn't take all the animals so someone else took the rest," said Shehan. "They ended up taking the mom and the baby and we took the donkey and a mule."

The extra animals put the rescue at full capacity. "We can't really take anymore in unless we can find foster families or adopters."

The Bishop family met several of the animals. "We have dogs and my wife came out and said hey, lets look at donkeys. Well, we have a nice acreage so we thought it might be a good thing to do," said Ed Bishop.

"And they are so cute and they need to be rescued," said Shelley Bishop. "A lot of people have horses, not that many people have donkeys so it's a lot different."

The Shehans hoped people would step up to help, especially after the dry weather last summer. The effects of the drought have trickled down to the rescue. The bales of hay used to feed the animals cost anywhere from $100 to $150. "It's an expense that you have to keep paying," said Shehan. "You have to take care of them."

That's where the Shehan family comes in, continuing to train and work with each animal until they find a permanent home. "She'll be a sweetheart when I get done."
