Grocery shopping on a budget can be tough, especially when you're trying to eat healthy, so one grocery store in Omaha is trying to make it easier for you. Hy-Vee held several Shopping Matters Grocery Tours on Saturday.

Racine Carter is a busy mother of two who usually dreads going grocery shopping. “Running around the store, not knowing what to get." Like many people she struggles on how to buy healthy food on a budget, so when she heard about the free tour she was excited.

Dietician Rebecca Beaudoin led the tour. In the meat department, Beaudoin talked about ways to save money. She says a good way to do that is to buy half the meat you usually would, then add beans or more vegetables to the meal. Also, look for the word “lean." It’s better for you.

Now to the cereal aisle. Her tips include looking for items that say “whole wheat.” The same goes for breads.

Another tip is if you struggle knowing which foods are healthy or not, each item is labeled to help you. The scale goes from 1 to 100 with 100 being the healthiest. Clementines, for example, are labeled 94.

Participants were also taught to look around for sales and then decide what to buy. And don’t forget something from each food group. “Half of our plate should be fruits and vegetables, a part of our plate is protein and a part is whole grains," said Beaudoin.

At the end of the tour came the big test. With a budget of $10, everyone was asked to find something in each food group. Carter was one of the first to get done and she ended up the big winner for getting the most bang for her buck. “It made me feel like I own the store now."

Hy-Vee hopes to hold more tours in the weeks to come. Its goal is to help customers and help battle obesity.
