The year was 1905. Teddy Roosevelt was president -- and 100 acres is auctioned off in what would eventually become Las Vegas. It's also the same year -- Alverna Roark of Omaha was born. She turned 108-years-old Monday.
The staff and other residents of the "Hickory Villa" sang Happy Birthday to her during a reception -- complete with cake and cookies and balloons.
We asked Alverna Roark what's her secret to living a long and healthy life? "I don't know. I exercise and I worked all the time and after that -- came here with all these good people."
Alverna's husband is no longer alive. She didn't have children.
Nieces and nephews attended the party.
By the way -- she lived on her own until she was 104.
