When an employee of an Omaha convenience store arrived for work Tuesday morning, he was in for quite a surprise. A man outside told him he suspected someone had damaged the front door while it was closed for the night. When the employee entered the store, the other man followed him in. Then he pulled out a gun.
This happened about 5am at the Regis Food Mart at 6828 S. 143rd Plaza. The gunman demanded cash from the safe as well as cigarettes and liquor from the store shelves. While all of this was happening, the employee managed to hit a panic button.
Thankfully, police were already on their way. They were called to the area of 143rd & Harrison to check on the well being of a shirtless man on foot.
Police believe the suspect, identified as 19-year old Kamari R. Monday, repeatedly kicked the front door in a failed attempt to break into the business before the employee arrived. Turns out, the gun he was carrying was plastic. Police are not releasing his mug shot until they can determine if he is a suspect in other similar crimes.
Monday, who was arrested Tuesday, probably won't appear in court until Wednesday.
