Man enters guilty plea for giving Ambien to minors. The plea agreement with 59-year-old William D. Nelson of Meadow Grove, Nebraska involved Nelson pleading no contest to child abuse, a Class IIIA Felony and the sentencing recommendation of probation. Five other felony counts were dismissed.
The Cassgram reports Nelson provided Zoplidem, a controlled prescription sleep aid (Ambien), to five teenagers while he, along with other adults, were supervising an overnight outing at Platte River State Park last June 14th. The boys ranged in age from 13 to 17 years old.
Nelson had a prescription for the drug for his own use and took the drug that night, said Chief Deputy County Attorney Colin Palm. Palm said Nelson was at a picnic table and offered the drug to several boys at the camp. Some said no but five did take the pills. The Cass County Sheriff’s Department was called after others observed peculiar behavior in the teenagers and one walked into a glass window. The sheriff’s department report said the teens were taken to Midlands Hospital to be checked out and were released that night with no major health or physical problems.
The sheriff’s deputy had to wake Nelson in his cabin that night and Palm said Nelson only vaguely remembers being at the picnic table.
Sentencing was set for March 4th but there may be a restitution issue as there were medical bills at the hospital for the boys.
