Gross High School Waterboy Shows Dedication To Game

If you've been to a Gross High School Football Game, you've likely seen Ben Herek on the field, filling up water bottles and helping out his teammates. Herek has down syndrome, but he doesn't let it keep him off the field.

His mom, Cris Herek, told WOWT 6 News, "He (Ben) has a pretty big fanbase, he used to wave at the crowd, but now he's very focused. It's great to see him down there with the kids."

Herek is the Waterboy for every game, home and away. The junior, who goes to Papillion La Vista South, was asked to be the waterboy at Gross because both his brother and dad played for the team.

Ben, though, may enjoy being on the field the most. Last year his passion for football and position as waterboy helped get him a State Championship medal after Gross High School's win.

The running joke in the family is a rivalry between the Dad, brother, and Ben, and Ben coming out on top because he has a State medal, but neither of the other two do.

Ben told WOWT 6 News he enjoys "helping the team" and he agreed with his Dad when he said, "Ben would skip his own birthday party to make it to one of those games."
