Gretna School Bond Projects:

High School Addition

Whitetail Elementary Construction

Bus Barn Additional Bays

80 Acres Purchased for Future Needs

It's Nebraska's fastest growing community but the school system is intent on small town service.

Two years ago voters in Gretna approved a $35.8-million dollar bond to improve schools but the new brick and mortar won't change the school community.

The addition to Gretna High School will double the size of the school but it won't be completed until the start of the next school year.

That's alright for junior Brian Beran. Beran says he's excited about being the first class to graduate after the renovation but in the meantime the students have had to adjust.

Brian Beran says, "It is really crowded in the hallways during our passing periods and stuff like that and sometimes during class they're hammering next to a classroom and we'll have to move to the library so we can focus."

Another thing the school board wanted to do was to anticipate the future needs of students in the district so they connected all of the school buildings; new, renovated and existing with fiber optics.

Superintendent Dr. Kevin Riley says the community leaders and school board were focused on providing for the needs of students for years to come. That's why the fiber optics were installed.

Dr. Kevin Riley says, "The iPad or something similar to it will be the text book and that is all a child will be given instead of six different text books at the high school or seven different text books at the high school level."

What that time comes Gretna will be ready both with the technology and with the space needed.

The Gretna School Board voted to double the size of the high school rather than build a second school because they wanted to keep the sense of a community school.

Dr. Riley says some future school board will have to decide whether to be a large Class A school or two Class B schools.
