It's costing a business a lot of money and posing danger for customers. Big John’s Car Wash in Bellevue has been hit by thieves twice in the last month. Sarpy County Crimestoppers is asking for your help.
John Yost Jr. is used to moving grates from inside the car wash stalls. That’s because every so often he has to clean out the drain.
“Usually when I have these pits pumped, they're almost all the way up to the top and they are 4.5 to 5 feet deep,” said Yost.
That’s why when the grates from three stalls went missing it got dangerous.
“The first time they hit was a Saturday night and they stole the grates out of this bin we're standing in,” said Yost.
Surveillance video caught the thieves in action.
“The truck is small enough they can only get three grates in so they are taking them a couple at a time,” said Yost.
They hit the car wash twice. In the video you can watch as they pull up a truck, lift the two grates and put them in the back of the truck.
“They don't realize what they are doing. Somebody could pull in here and have their car fall in the pit,” said Yost.
He says the drains are like stepping into quicksand and dangerous for cars and people. To prevent injury and accidents he has temporarily installed wooden panels in stalls where the grates were stolen.
“It will hold a vehicle but this is just a temporary fix until we can get the other ones ordered and made,” said Yost.
It costs about $800 a piece. He says six pieces were stolen. And he says it’s even more disheartening, considering each piece is only worth about $30 in scrap metal.
This isn’t the only problem they've been faced with. Just today someone stole a few signs outside the business.
