The mayor of Grand Island has been arrested for suspicion of drunken driving. Mayor Jay Vavricek was arrested in Howard County on Saturday.

City spokeswoman Wendy Meyer-Jerke released a statement Sunday acknowledging Vavricek was stopped. The statement said he is awaiting the results of a blood test. It said he apologizes to his family, the community and others who are dependent upon him "for the events that have occurred in the last 24 hours."

Vavricek said he will take corrective action so "they will never be affected like this again." Vavricek added that he will comment no further since the matter will be addressed by the judicial system.
