That is about to end.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says beginning Wednesday, a legal crossover will be in place to allow drivers who travel east from Plattsmouth on U.S. 34 onto Interstate 29 to head north. Until now, once they reached I-29, they had to drive south to Barlett, Iowa and make a U-turn in order to travel north.
Normally, median crossovers along the interstate are restricted to use by law enforcement. When the Missouri River flooding began in late May, construction work was already underway on the I-29 bridge at Highway 34. The work prevented traffic from heading north at the interchange.
