He's covered the entire state with his golf clubs. Ted Stouffer of Omaha has played every course in Nebraska, 244 courses over 19 years. His quest ended at Hillside Golf Course in Sidney, Nebraska.
Ted’s ambitious adventure led him to the only course in Nebraska the 68-year-old had not played. “Two-hundred-forty-three courses before. I haven’t seen anything like this in Nebraska.”
Joining him for the historic round was Kyle Huus, who holds the Hillside course record of 59, city manager Gary Person and Sidney native John Knicely.
When Ted started this journey in 1992, he was still practicing law. With every swing he thought he was making progress. “And when I retired in 2005 I discovered that I still had about 160 to go. I thought I had better get organized.”
One of the courses Ted played is in Sargent, Nebraska and it's very unusual. When you get up to the green, there's no grass, but artificial turf instead. No mowing, just add a little sand to the fake grass. And for green fees, you just leave your money in the slot.
He played the "cow chip club" in Lawrence, Nebraska with sand greens, the seven-hole course in Potter and encountered a rattlesnake on the course in Ainsworth.
"In late 2007 I developed rotator cuff tendonitis and didn't play any new courses at all in 2008 and I thought that perhaps my quest might come to an end.”
But the left-hander persevered and went into the record book, even though there isn't one. “I'm a little leery about claiming to be the first one to do this, but I'm fairly positive that I'll be the first one to have played these 244 courses.”
