A couple who grew up in Omaha and made a fortune in natural gas exploration in Australia have donated $5 million to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a new nanoscience building.
The Lincoln Journal Star says the gift from Don Voelte and Nancy Keegan was announced Thursday. The $13.9 million center, which is expected to be completed in December, will be named in honor of the couple, who live in Los Angeles. The gift, along with a $6.9 million competitive grant and a $2 million university commitment, completes funding for the building.
Nanoscience is the study of very small particles. The building will provide centralized research facilities for more than 80 physics, chemistry, engineering and other faculty members.
Voelte is the retired CEO of Woodside Petroleum in Australia.
