Gas Wars Happening in Metro

Have you noticed it? The ethanol blend at gas pumps recently dropped below three dollars a gallon. One part of town is seeing even better prices than most.

Charlie Menke lives in Norfolk, and when he saw the price of gas at I-80 and 144th Street, he had to stop. "When I saw $2.79, that's cheaper than I can get it back home, so better top off the tank."

All four gas stations in the area have been part of the price war, but it doesn't stop there. Two stations just down the road at Highway 370 and the Interstate have been just as low. About $.13 to $.14 cheaper than stations in most other parts of town, and even cheaper than in Council Bluffs.

"I passed a bunch of $2.92s on the way, and this is $2.79," said James Bell who lives in Sarpy County.

So is it worth it to drive a few miles to save on gas? First of all, $.14 less per gallon for a 15 gallon fill up saves you $2.10.

Now let's say your car gets 25 miles per gallon, and you drive four miles out of your way to save that $2.10. You'll use about $.47 in gas just getting there, cutting your overall savings to just $1.63 per tank.

If you go ten miles out of the way, you'll save less than a dollar, but for those who live in the area or drive by everyday, the lower prices are tough to pass up.

" I don't know why they are doing it, but it's great!" said Bell.

Gas prices can change from one hour to the next. The best bet is to find the cheapest prices in your area by looking on websites like GasBuddy.com.
