A Nebraska inmate on furlough picked a bad place to fall off the wagon. A witness spotted him using illegal drugs in the parking lot of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

Thirty-eight-year-old Chad Schaefer had taken his sister to the law enforcement center in Omaha for a court ordered alcohol test. While waiting in the car, a witness passed by and reported to 911 that Schaefer was injecting something. Authorities suspect it was meth. Deputies couldn’t find a syringe outside the sheriff’s office, though deputies did find drug paraphernalia in the car.

Schaefer was taken into custody and held for a parole officer. Corrections Director Bob Houston told Fact Finders that Schaefer is back behind the fence at the Omaha Correctional Center.

Houston said Schaefer was a "breath away" from parole in May. Schaefer is doing a 4-5-year sentence for burglary and because he’s not considered a violent offender, he was allowed furlough to his home.
