Funeral services for Bob Hanes will take place Monday morning in Weeping Water. The 51-year-old ambulance driver was killed last Tuesday night in a collision with a pickup.
The vehicles crashed head-on along Highway 34 near Elmwood, killing Hanes and the pickup driver, 24-year-old William Whitlatch of Syracuse, Nebraska. The Cass County Sheriff's Department said the pickup crossed the center line. Investigators said there were reports of the pickup moving erratically before the accident occurred.
Two EMTs riding in the back on the trip to Lincoln were injured. Forty-six-year-old James "Beau" Flint has since been released from the hospital. Thirty-year-old Melissa Hanes, Bob’s daughter, remains in fair condition. The patient traveling in the ambulance, Luther Gunnels, had non-life threatening injuries.
The First Congregational Church in Weeping Water was packed for a vigil Friday night.
