The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office held a fundraiser Sunday for the families of two of their own at the Belvedere Hall in Papillion.
Deputy Ryan Fawcett is a seven-year veteran who is battling an inoperable brain tumor. This is the third time Fawcett has had a tumor. But even cancer doesn’t keep him patrolling Sarpy County.
“You have to get up in the morning,” says Fawcett. “You just can't quit, you always got to keep fighting.”
Organizers expected around 1,000 people to show up to the event which ran for most the day.
People got to enjoy a spaghetti dinner while getting the chance to win prizes and bid on items in a silent auction.
Fawcett's wife, Jodi says it's the support of friends, even strangers, that keeps the family hopeful.
“There’s no amount of thanks we could give for the people that have helped, the people that have come, and the people who have supported us.”
The fundraiser also honors 28-year veteran, Deputy David McAnulty who died in December after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer.
His wife Sharon couldn’t believe the turnout.
“It’s just very overwhelming and emotional to see all these people turnout for this and to have their support at this time and their sympathy.”
And even though day to day is tough, Sharon says she takes pride in the support of her extended family of Sarpy County law enforcement.
“Words cannot express how grateful we are for all this.”
The event has raised more than $4,000. All proceeds will go to families of the two deputies.
