Fun in the Park Returns For Fourth Year

For the fourth year in a row, Omaha police are teaming up with the Miller Park Neighborhood Association to provide some good, clean fun for area children.

Fun in the Park gets underway Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Miller Park Pavilion, 27th & Redick Ave. It runs until 8 p.m., offering free swimming, golf lessons, a bicycle rodeo, dunk tank and more. The event is geared toward children between kindergarten and 7th grade.

"A youth's interaction with the police department, their first time may be seeing somebody get arrested or maybe seeing what they see on the news," explained O.P.D. Crime Prevention Specialist Theola Cooper, "not realizing that officers are just regular people, too, outside of uniform."

Cooper hopes what's become an annual event is driving home an important message. "It's to let the community know that it does take the community," she said, "working side by side with the police department, to help with matters of crime."

The event will also feature bicycle safety checks. Children attending will have the chance to win a bike in a raffle, as well as other prizes.
