Anger; frustration; pity. All are considered legitimate, especially if your child is born with a congenital heart defect that requires three surgeries before the age of two.
For some, it’s difficult to turn those feelings into positive energy and even more rare to channel them into organizing a city-wide event to benefit thousands.
Local father-turned-race-director, Jordan Stevens, did just that by turning the love of running into an organ and tissue donation awareness event. The second annual Donate Life Nebraska Trail and Heroes Walk is scheduled for Saturday, July 27.
We first met Jordan's daughter, Macy Stevens, back in November at Children's Hospital and Medical Center. She was doing just fine after a heart transplant back in 2008. Jordan had received, as the first Nebraskan to do so, the Donate Life Champion Award for organizing the race for the first time.
Now, he's back at it again this year with aims of drawing more people to become organ and tissue donors through Donate Life Nebraska.
She wants to get the word out, "to get people to sign-up to become organ donors. Approximately 50 percent of licensed drivers in the state of Nebraska are organ donors currently," she said. "We are obviously hoping to increase that percentage.”
