Frustration over Armed Robberies

It seems like a broken record. Every night -- we have not one -- but a number of armed robberies to report. It's getting so bad, we're getting calls from the convenience store managers to get the surveillance photos on the news as fast as possible.

"It scares us because we don't know who is coming in to rob us," said Chris Petty, who has worked behind the counter at convenience stores for a decade. His philosophy to survival is simple. "Take what you want and don't shoot me."

Sunday night, two men walked into his store at 52nd and Leavenworth and left with $80 and a pack of cigarettes.

"It's gotten to the point that we have no way to defend ourselves," said Petty.

Understandably -- convenience store workers are on edge. But it appears a few men are responsible for a whole lot of robberies. Case in point - Saturday night -- the Super Store in Ralston is robbed by two men. The robbers look the same as those who stuck a gun in Chris Petty's face. Same red coat -- same gloves.

"You don't know what is going to happen," said Petty's Manager Amie Farrell. "You don't know what these people are thinking when they come into the store."

The Valero store on Leavenworth has a history. Under a different name of Infinite -- a clerk was killed outside in the parking lot in 2008.

In Sunday night's case, workers still can't believe the words that came from the robber's mouth. "Sorry I got kids" is what they said according to Farrell. She said, "Well, my employee has kids too. Please don't shoot me."

So keep the clerks nerves in mind -- next time you go into a store wearing a hoodie with good intentions -- give them some peace of mind. There's a sign out front telling people to take off their hoodies or winter masks before entering.

Stores are taking more and more precautions. A few are hiring security. Many are reducing the amount of cash on hand.
