The Fremont City Council has approved a smoke-free policy in city parks and on city trails, but that doesn't mean people will be fined if they light up.
The council approved a resolution on Tuesday that bans smoking and smokeless tobacco, except in designated posted areas.
City Administrator Dale Shotkoski says it's a statement of the council's intent and it's not going into city code with any fines.
Fremont's policy is modeled after other Nebraska cities that have similar bans.
In Lincoln, the city's park board will consider a smoking ban for city parks on Thursday. The board's recommendation will go to the mayor for final approval.
