Flooded Roads Could Cause Domino Effect

During peak travel hours, it's a log jam.

"It is already backed up probably a good two miles," Pam Caba of Plattsmouth said.

"There's not a lot we're going to be able to do about it," Caba said. "So you're going to have a lot of Plattsmouth residents probably taking Highway 66 and going up through Highway 50 to Omaha."

Another major travel route is already under siege.

Flood waters have already started to cover Highway 2 to the south.

And if the interstate closes, traffic on Highway 34 may increase dramatically, if that become the crossing point between Iowa and Nebraska.

Caba says that's bad news due to construction downtown and detours already push traffic into neighborhoods.

"Our downtown is Highway 34 and so obviously the back streets, the neighborhoods, you're going to have a lot of people cutting through," she said. "I'm worried about the truck traffic more than anything."

Back on Highway 75, topographical problems make this route more dangerous. There are a lot of hills, curves, turns and pedestrian traffic along the route.

Added to that is that it's a two-lane road.

Sherri Scheele and Cyndi Citta drove to Plattsmouth to deliver beauty supplies.

They know problems driving to and from the area lie ahead.

"We've got business to do," Scheele said. "We've got customers to take care of and you've got to get to them and if the roads are closed, you've got to find a route to get there."

Citta said Highway 75 is already well traveled as it is.

"And if the traffic is going to increase, its going to get worse," she said.

Caba says should traffic increase, so does the potential for serious problems.

"I'm worried about the kids," she said. "They're going to need to keep the kids in because it's going to become a safety issue."

And there's one more potential problem...what if Highway 75 closes?

That could result in a 38 mile detour, one way.

In the meantime, Plattsmouth officials are working with the Nebraska Department of Roads, Cass County Sheriff and State Patrol to devise ways to slow increased traffic flows for safety purposes along Highway 75.
