First Babies Of 2013

There was a little competition in the metro for the first baby born in 2013.

Colton Alexander Ray was born one minute into the new year at Bellevue Medical Center. The 6-pound, 21-inch bundle of joy is the second child for Kayla and Ross Ray of Bellevue, who talked about the possibility of Colton being the first baby of the new year.

"He was joking around about the end of the year, the tax break joke and he said with my luck, he'll probably be born at 12:01 and sure enough, here he is." Kayla said.

Colton didn't know it, but he had some competition from Mia Joselyn Garcia across town. "I was very emotional I wanted to cry," said mom Sadia Magareno. Mia is the family's second child.

Dad Matias Garcia said it looked like Mia was in the running for one of the last babies born in 2012. The family was about to celebrate the new year but little Mia had other plans. Matias and Sadia began a mad dash from Bellevue to Alegent Creighton Medical Center around 10 p.m. Monday.

"When I started driving she said stop, stop because I think she was feeling something was coming out so hey, I just stopped, you know," Matias said. "But I needed to get her to the hospital and so we got here in time." Mia finally met mom and dad face to face at 1:51 a.m. Tuesday.

Babies and moms are doing fine and will all share in the joy of starting off the new year by getting to know each other a little better.

Pending reports of other, earlier births, it looks like a 6-pound, 12-ounce boy delivered in Des Moines was the first baby born in Iowa in 2013. Ryder Allen Frink was born at 12:13 a.m. Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. His parents, Ashley and Patrick Frink, of Pleasant Hill, say he was due January 6th.

Among the other Iowa babies born on New Year's Day was a girl who was delivered at 12:17 a.m. at a Bettendorf hospital, a boy who arrived at 12:45 a.m. in Waterloo and a boy who was born at 1:04 a.m. at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

At St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, the first baby didn't arrive until 8:59 p.m. Tuesday.
