Omaha firefighters voted to approve a new contract, now it will head to the Omaha City Council to seal the deal. Once final, this will be the first contract since 2007 for Omaha firefighters.

The voting was held Tuesday and Wednesday. More than 600 rank-and-file members of the Local 385 cast a ballot.

The deal, negotiated through the city council does a number of things.

Firefighters would see an increase in wages, but more expenses for health care.

The city saves money by raising the age of retirement.

Before it takes effect, the personnel board and city council must approve it as well.

Last year, the city council rejected a deal negotiated by Mayor Suttle's staff -- stating it didn't save the taxpayers enough money.

In turn, the city council took over negotiating duties with the unions.
