Felon Seeks Early Release from Parole Board

Monday, convicted felon Raul Shaw went before the Parole Board asking for an early release. In 2007, Shaw was convicted for 1st Degree Assault.

Shaw first made headlines in 2004 after he was shot in the head and suffered critical injuries to his brain. Shaw said he was shot while riding in a car from Council Bluffs to Omaha on the I-480 Bridge.

In the end, it would be a fight over car rims that led to the shooting. At the time, Shaw told Channel Six News the event changed him.

"I just keep on learning and learning, getting back on track," Shaw said. "This is a miracle. I know I got to do something. I know I got to go to church every Sunday. I know that for sure."

However, in 2007, he was convicted and sentenced to serve eight to 14 years in prison on a 1st Degree Assault charge.

At 32-years-old, Shaw was still trying to turn his life around.

"The misconduct report indicates that you assaulted your wife by slapping and punching her, which result in 6 months loss of non restorable good time,” Esther Casmer, State Parole Board member said. “She covered the tattoo of your name on her neck with another tattoo, and that upset you," Casmer said. “It didn't upset me," Shaw replied. "You just didn't like it?" "I just didn't like it,” Shaw said.

Earlier this year, Shaw was accused of assaulting his wife, Mary Jane, inside her car after she came to pick him up for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. It was an off-campus program Shaw was completing while serving his sentence. Because of the incident, Shaw was deducted 6 months of accrued “Good Time.”

Eventually, in criminal court, Shaw’s wife would drop the accusations, along with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office. Unfortunately for Shaw, the board had made their decision and denied his release.

"That his parole be rescinded, request a full psyche evaluation and his case be reviewed in April 2013," Casmer said. With good time, Shaw could be released in 2014.
