A Smith Center area landowner found the dead bird at 4 p.m. on New Year's Day and called local authorities, who contacted fish and wildlife agents.

The local newspaper reports the Fish and Wildlife Service says in a news release that the eagle was seen alive and flying around a short time before it was found dead.

It's a violation of federal law to kill any eagle. Authorities are asking that anyone with information about the bird's death contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's office of law enforcement.

The service says it may pay for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever killed the eagle.
