The U.S. Housing and Urban Development agency will give $7.7 million to 46 local programs in Iowa to fight homelessness.

Agency Secretary Shaun Donovan announced the grants Tuesday, saying they were among more than 7,100 across the country that totaled $1.5 billion.

The grants follow the release last week of a survey showing that about 3,000 U.S. cities and counties reported 636,000 homeless people in one night last January.

Des Moines and West Des Moines will get nearly $2.8 million of the
Iowa grants.
