Fans really have a chance to become a part of the fun of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Omaha. Inside FanFest, there really is something for everyone.
Girls with Moylan Premiere Ice Skating in Omaha may not be competing in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but they are still a part of them. The members got to show their stuff during Thursday's FanFest. Skaters of every skill level and every age took part.
"It's a lot of fun and you get to meet a lot of friends doing it," said 11-year-old Addison Dunbar, who performed to "Dancing Queen" with two other girls. Dunbar said having the championships in Omaha is exciting. "It's actually really inspiring because I want to go to the Olympics some day."
Dunbar's mother Courtney said the girls put in a lot of hard work. "When she was 4 years old she came to us and said I want to learn to skate and we said okay and it turns into what it is now and it's about three hours of on and off ice a day, so it's a lot of time and a lot of training. But you grow to really love it, you have friends at the rink and they have friends at the rink and there's a lot of inspiration in what we see here this week, so it's all worth the time."
Leah Keiser of Los Angeles put in the time, but unfortunately won't be hitting the ice. "On Friday, before I came here, when I was training, I got injured, so I'm going to watch."
There is plenty to do, from glitter tattoos, to even purchasing a new pair of skates, FanFest offers it all. Even girls from California say Omaha is the place to be. "It's cold, very cold, but after all it is ice skating," said Chelsea Liu of Orange County, California.
FanFest continues at the CenturyLink Center through Sunday. It's free and open to the public. For more information, click the link below.
The fans aren’t the only ones having fun. Channel 6 News photographer Wayne Martino, who had never been on skates before, joined reporter Chase Moffitt after they finished doing a story on the three couples who won medals in the junior ice dancing competition Wednesday night, Alexandra Aldridge and Daniel Eaton, Holly Moore and Daniel Klaber and Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker. For his part, Wayne never fell!
