Creighton was at the center of March Madness in the middle of the afternoon Friday. Fans across the metro followed the NCAA Basketball Tournament action from Philadelphia.
All of the Creighton greats are remembered at The Bluejay Bar and Grill at 24th and Davenport in Omaha as fans gathered to cheer on their current heroes. "We're gonna win,” said Kaci Frates. “I talked to Greg (center Echenique) the other day. We're gonna win. I gave him Gummy Worms the other day. I'm serious, he's in one of my classes."
All of this excitement is good for Creighton and good for Omaha. Some fans believe Omaha just might be turning into a basketball town.
“The fact that we have a good basketball team in Omaha is a good thing,” said Mark Connor. “The Huskers are in Lincoln, but the fact that we have something to watch during the winter is a good thing. Lots of Creighton pride, lots of Bluejay pride, wouldn't have it any other way."
This time of year actually puts a little fear in some basketball fans as they find ways to enjoy games being played in the afternoon when most of us are working or should be working. How many went out to lunch and didn't go back to work?
“It would be all of us, there’s not a single person who is not skipping work.” Will that mean getting in trouble? “No, he's the boss."
