Relatives of the man shot by police over the weekend tell WOWT 6 News that they are just regular people trying to deal with a family member who has mental issues.
Police say 43-year-old Dale Hickman stabbed two family members in their home Saturday night. When police arrived on the scene they found Hickman armed with a knife.
Six-year police veteran Angela Lydon shot Dale Hickman. He was then taken into custody.
Hickman had threatened to kill his entire family but family members tell us it didn’t have to happen this way. They say police did not have to shoot Dale Hickman. They say he had just escaped from a hospital and he wanted police to shoot and kill him.
When police arrived at the Hickman home near 4th and Walnut, two family members had been stabbed. Family members say it was Dale Hickman who was trying to make good on a threat he made earlier in the evening while holding a bow and arrow.
They say police had arrested Dale and taken him in for a mental evaluation. The family says Dale later escaped and returned to the family home dressed in nothing but hospital pajama pants. They say that’s when he and stabbed his 63-year-old father and his 38-year-old sister.
The family wants to know how Dale escaped and why they weren’t notified when he did.
Police say all injured members of the Hickman family should survive.
Officer Lydon is on administrative leave in accordance with standard police policy while the incident is investigated.
