Evening Commute Should Be Smooth Sailing

Winter is back and it brought a good amount of snow with it. Getting to work Wednesday was a challenge for some, but what about the ride home?

Traffic has been moving along as work crews were busy all day to make sure the ride home is a safe one.

In Bellevue, the snow plows left the snow in the middle of the street. In the Olde Towne neighborhood, the big piles of snow made it tough to change lanes in some places, but Public Works officials said all streets will be passable and everything should be in good shape by the rush home Wednesday evening.

“We started at four this morning, planning on being done about four o’clock this afternoon and then we're gonna keep a crew on ‘til about eight tonight to get through the rush hour traffic, make sure everybody gets home safe,” said Ross DiMauro with Bellevue Public Works. “Then we'll come in early again in the morning around four o’clock to check everything out.”

There were some surprises in other parts of Sarpy County. Just south of Midlands Hospital, a sink hole was revealed after plows moved through the area. And some of the exit ramps around Highway 370 and Highway 75 were still a little slick and caused some problems.

In Council Bluffs, 17 snow plows were on the streets, many of them dodging parked vehicles as they tried to get the streets clear, but snow removal was right on schedule. “By tomorrow morning, everything will be done and we'll concentrate tomorrow night on picking up snow from the uptown area and hauling it away,” said Jeremy Noel of Council Bluffs Public Works.

Omaha Public Works reminds us that when clearing your sidewalk or driveway, don't throw the snow in the street. It slows down the truck drivers and it is against the law.
