A plan to turn a major Dundee intersection into a roundabout has been scrapped.

The Merchants Association and business owners opposed the idea recommended by a project consultant.

City Engineer, Todd Pfitzer told residents and City Council representatives that a roundabout at 50th & Underwood Avenue was the safest way to manage the volume of traffic at this intersection.

Those living in Dundee were afraid a roundabout would keep the area from being pedestrian and bike friendly.

Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Jim Suttle agreed to update the stop lights at the intersection instead of the roundabout.

“We need to listen to the people living and working in the Dundee neighborhood so we can balance safety with a streetscape plan that works for the residents in the area,” said Mayor Suttle in a news release. “It’s important for us to move forward on making this historic neighborhood a destination.”

The Dundee Streetscape project is expected to begin in April and completed in August.
