An Omaha man was sentenced Friday to 10 to 15 years in prison for motor vehicle homicide in the death of 18-year-old Amanda Meyers.

A judge also ordered Samuel Corbitt's license be suspended for 15 years. Corbitt had faced up to 50 years behind bars.
The crash happened on September 28, 2010 when police say Meyers pulled out onto Pacific Street from 64th Avenue. Although Corbitt had the right of way, his blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was .210. Meyers, of Bellevue, although a minor, had also been drinking that evening and was tested at .073.
"From our side everyone was a little bit shocked given his prior record that the sentence was fairly light,” said Michelle Halim with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. “Nothing will bring Amanda back and no sentence would ever be long enough for taking someone’s life, but we felt like it wasn’t enough for the crime. It didn't send the community a strong enough message, I believe."
Corbitt apologized to Meyers' family in court and said it was his fault that "Amanda is gone." He turns 37 on Saturday.
