Driver Shot To Death, Suspect In Custody

A Dow City, Iowa man is being held on $1 million bond, charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a man Saturday morning.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Department says a person identifying himself as 28-year-old Benton Wingrove called 911 around 1:40 a.m. saying he had just shot "at a car that swerved" near U.S. Highway 30 in Dow City.

The car crashed into a house. The driver, 29-year-old Adam Lary of Dow City, was taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital where died less than an hour later of a gunshot wound to the torso.

The investigation found witnesses who said Wingrove and Lary had argued earlier inside a nearby bar. Both then went outside with Wingrove returning alone, breathing heavily. He left again about 10 minutes later. Bar patrons said they then heard several gunshots, followed by the sound of a car engine revving.

Lary's car had multiple bullet holes. Wingrove was located at the scene with the gun on the ground at his feet.
