Dorm Rate Hikes Proposed For Nebraska Students

University of Nebraska students will be paying more for dorm life and cafeteria food next school year if the Board of Regents were to approve a proposed increase.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln students would pay about $400 more. And Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist says that could be in addition to $600 in taxes if legislators approve Gov. Dave Heineman's proposal to eliminate a sales tax exemption for college dorms.

At their meeting Friday regents are scheduled to consider the 4.5 percent increase in room and board rates for UNL dorm residents. The proposal would increase rates by no more than 4.5 percent for the 2014-15 school year.

The regents also will consider room and board rate hikes at three other NU campuses.
