Don't Forget About Pets When Preparing For Storms

While you make preparations to protect your family during severe weather, don't forget your four-legged family members.

First of all make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. Tags are good, but microchips are better.

Also consider keeping your dog in the safest part of the house during the day while you're not home.

“If you crate your dog anyway, why not crate them in the basement,” says Pam Wiese with the Nebraska Humane Society. “And then that way they'll be safe and below ground. If you don't crate them, and you've got room in the basement, maybe they could stay in the basement when you're not there anyway.”

And of course take your pet with you to the basement if you're home during severe weather.

Wiese says cats should always be crated during a storm because they can get spooked and get away very easily.
