A chocolate lab named Coco was found abandoned on Highway 6 near Ashland and volunteers at the local pound are trying to raise money to get her treatment for a massive tumor.
The dog was found in late July walking down the middle of the highway. An employee at a nearby gas station spotted her and called police to take her to the shelter. Coco is now in a foster home. A veterinarian who examined Coco believes she is strong enough to undergo surgery to remove the mass.
Coco's foster mom, Misty Carter, says she is a "happy, go lucky, energetic, look at me dog." She remains very active despite the large tumor, estimated at weighing five pounds.
The surgery will cost $3,000 and people in the Ashland community have been working to raise funds to help Coco have a normal life.
