According to the latest census, Rockwell City's population was 1,709. In 2000, the city had 2,264 residents. That's a loss of 555 residents.

Rockwell City is home to a state prison that houses about 500 inmates. Heinlen told The Messenger in Fort Dodge that he wants to know if the inmates weren't counted or were improperly listed in some other community.

He says if the population drop is correct, the city will lose $50,000 in road use tax money that's distributed according to population

State Sen. Daryl Beall, a Fort Dodge Democrat, has asked members
of Iowa's congressional delegation to learn the procedures for challenging a census count.
