A Des Moines dentist whose staff reported she reused gloves on patients has agreed to pay a $2,500 fine.
Dr. Rebecca Westra agreed to pay the fine to settle administrative charges filed by the Iowa Dental Board, which said her staff complained to the state in 2012 about "poor infection-control protocols."
The board's allegations say Dr. Westra would wash and reuse gloves and reuse disposable chair covers. Inspectors also said she failed to keep records of staff vaccinations and didn't properly store dental instruments.
Westra's lawyer Kevin Driscoll says Dr. Westra disputes the allegations, but also says she decided to settle the matter so "she could continue to devote her time and attention to the care of her patients."
