The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Division concluded National Forensic Week last Friday with a Friends, Family and Public tour on Friday. The Forensic Division of the Sheriff’s Office opened up the Douglas County Forensic Service Center to area law enforcement agencies, county attorney’s, city prosecutors, news outlets and the public to show the importance forensic science plays in criminal cases.

Throughout last week the Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Division held various events to give the public a rare chance to get an inside look at how forensic science works. The event proved to be very successful with several attorney’s from the Douglas County Attorney’s Office attending including Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine, Omaha City Prosecutor’s Office and The Sarpy County Attorney’s Office.

Friday’s event drew a large crowd from the general public including 30 youths. Forensic Services Division personnel were on hand Friday to provide ID kits for children including fingerprints and DNA swabs.

Government leaders in attendance included County Board Chair Mary Ann Borgeson, City Councilwoman Aimee Melton, State Senator Dr. Rick Kolowski, Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis, Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Marty Bilek, Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen and LaVista Police Chief Bob Lausten. Sheriff Timothy Dunning who showed his support through his daily attendance hopes to see the event grow and continue as a positive way to reach out to the public and government leaders and showcase the professionals in the Forensic Services Division.
