After a hard loss against the Baylor Bears, the Creighton men's basketball team has returned to Omaha from San Antonio.
WOWT 6 News met Coach Greg McDermott and the team at Eppley Airfield early Monday morning. Everyone was in a somber mood. While the group was relieved to be home, no one expected to make this trip so soon.
"I'm disappointed. I hoped to be staying in San Antonio and flying to California tomorrow," said coach McDermott. "Even good things come to an end once in a while. I'm still very proud of what this team's accomplished."
"Baylor was just top notch. They'd have beaten anybody," said team chaplain Tom Shanahan. "If they play like that, they're gonna win this whole thing."
With so many fans making the trip to see the Jays, McDermott says it's just a testament to how important the crowds have been for the team.
"That's what makes Creighton so special, and this team has really embraced that," he said. "I think there's certainly a love affair between our fan base and this team, and that goes both ways."
But the end of this season doesn't mean the Jays get any downtime. Coach McDermott says he'll hit the road again soon to start recruiting for next year.
