Creighton University will begin its celebration of the Vatican II anniversary on Friday.

The four-year celebration of the 50th anniversary begins with a welcome by Creighton University President Timothy R. Lannon, at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, in the ballroom of the Harper Center.

Vatican II was an ecumenical council held in Vatican City from Oct. 11, 1962, until Dec. 8, 1965.

This council represents a major event in the life of the Church of the 20th century, and for this reason it constitutes a fundamental era in universal history.

It came to be the conclusion of the Tridentine period and the beginning of a new phase in the history of the Church.

On Friday, Nov. 9, Father Lannon's welcome will be followed by an overview of Creighton’s four-year Vatican II celebration by Theology Professor and Barbara Readon Heaney Chair, Eileen Burke-Sullivan, S.T.D.

Professor emeritus of theology Fr. Thomas O’Meara, O.B., of Notre Dame will give a keynote presentation at 4 p.m.

A reception will follow the presentation at 5:30 p.m., honoring Vatican II participants, Msgr. James Cain, Mike Lawler Ph.D., and Msgr. Joseph Komonchak.

At 8:30 a.m. on Sat. Nov. 10, in St. John’s Church, the Rev. Pat Malone, S.J., will preside over the opening liturgy with Fr. O’Meara as Homilist.

Msgr. Komonchak will give a keynote presentation on the topic “Historic Context of the Council” at 10:15 a.m. in the Skutt Student Center ballroom.

From the fall of 2012 until the fall of 2015 various lectures, convocations, seminars, courses, films and other events will be sponsored focusing on the meaning and impact of the Second Vatican Council.
