An early morning crash Friday shut down the intersection of 72nd and Western Avenue. By midday Friday the intersection was reopened, but at least one lane was still blocked.
The crash happened just after 2 a.m. The driver, a young man, struck a utility pole that crashed down on top of the car, trapping the driver and a passenger inside. The wreckage, the pole and the power lines still attached to it, forced police to shut off the entire intersection. It remained closed through the morning rush.
The driver went to the hospital in critical condition. There was no immediate update on his condition or the condition of his passenger. Their names have not been released.
Several OPPD customers lost power for several hours because of the crash. Power was restored a little after 7 a.m.
