The Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail has been closed from Norfolk to O'Neill until a flood-ravaged bridge is replaced.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the flooding last
June from the Elkhorn River washed out a bridge three miles west of
Norfolk and caused other damaged to the trail.
The pedestrian bridge has been removed, and the commission says
there are plans to replace it but a time frame has not been set.
The commission says the trail is the longest rail-to-trail route
in the U.S. and Nebraska's first official recreational trail. It
follows the former Chicago and Northwestern rail line from
northeast Nebraska to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
A 123-mile section from O'Neill to Valentine remains open.
