The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to rule in a case that could have an impact on school lunches and education budgets in Iowa.
The court on Friday is expected to decide whether a lawsuit filed by Hawkeye Foodservice Distribution, Inc., against the Iowa Educators Corporation can move forward.
The corporation was formed by Iowa's area education agencies to negotiate contracts with vendors of everything from office supplies to sporting equipment. The goal is to save schools and libraries time and money in purchasing.
But Hawkeye Foodservice filed the lawsuit after one of its rivals won a contract as a prime food vendor, cutting it out of a lucrative business. Hawkeye contends the AEAs had no authority to form the corporation and that it is illegally competing with private enterprise.
