County Employees Get Health Insurance Shock

The "shock factor” to be presented to those on Cass County health insurance plan.

The insurance broker appeared before the Cass County Board of Commissioners and advocated the immediate scheduling of county employee information sessions. He said the sessions are needed after three months of high claims that could result in a 40% to 60% increase in health insurance premium costs next year if the pace continues.

The Cassgram reports in the past few years, it’s been in the spring when the jolt of the increase in the county health plan cost is brought before commissioners, before the budget year begins July 1st. However, Shane Jacobsen, an NP Dodge insurance broker, appeared before the county board this week.

He said $1.18 million in claims were paid out by United Healthcare in the previous three months. After taking out the three major claims which are probably unavoidable and the reason for insurance in the first place, Jacobsen said most of the remaining costs “are not catastrophic events, but pure utilization of the plan …and a lot of it.”
