The Council Bluffs Police Department is investigating after two men broke into a residence, shot a man, asked for money, and fled on foot.
Now those two men are on the run, and another is in critical condition.
Tammi Pickett, who lives nearby, knows she lives in a rough neighborhood at 2nd Ave. & 8th St. in Council Bluffs.
It's so rough, she's afraid to take her dogs out at night.
Sunday night's shooting is a prime example.
“The ambulance was going around the block a few times, almost like it couldn't stop yet, and then there was police cars up and down the block, and then a police car over here where we usually park,” Pickett says.
Police raced to the scene Sunday night at around 8:15 p.m.
Two men in ski masks forced their way into an apartment near 2nd Ave. & 8th St., shooting 36-year-old Thomas Campbell in the chest as they barged in.
The armed robbers demanded money from three other people inside, but they fled empty-handed.
Police say this isn't the usual activity for the city.
Sgt. Chad Meyers, or the Council Bluffs Police Department, says, “Obviously it's a cause for concern, and we're still working to see if there's a relationship whether the victim or the suspects may have known each other.”
As for Pickett, she's hoping to see the day when the neighborhood feels safe.
“I'd like to be able to walk down the street or bring my dogs out after dark and not have to worry about the elements,” she says.
Police say Campbell is in critical, but stable condition at the Nebraska Medical Center.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
Police are asking for your help in the investigation.
