A La Vista traffic officer has seen plenty of speeders over the years. On Wednesday, he ticketed a man who topped 82mph in town.

It happened on Giles Road south of Cabela's. A driver raced over a hill and soon spotted Officer Brian Stolley waiting in his police cruiser. "To be at 80-mph -- that's definitely the highest I've seen." The speed limit in this industrial area of town is 45mph.

The man in his 20's was driving a pickup. He told the officer that he was in a hurry. "Usually you see those higher speeds in sports cars and sedans."

Officer Stolley took a picture of the radar locked on 82mph as a reminder for others to slow down -- considering the fatal crashes we've had recently when speed was partially to blame. "It's going to take you twice as long to stop. So the distance you traveled to see a hazard -- you could have stopped if you had been going the speed limit."

So what does 82-in-a-45 do on the pocketbook? The ticket alone is $348 and the driver must appear in court.

While this one was in town, there have been plenty of examples of speeders topping 100mph on the interstate.

The fastest clocked in the metro in recent years was a motorcyclist doing 188mph on I-29 north of Council Bluffs.
