Consumer Alert: Renter's Insurance

How much does it cost to protect yourself if you rent, rather than own?

Keri Harris wishes she would have gotten renter's insurance before a fire roared through her complex. It destroyed six units at the Orleans complex at 84th & L on Tuesday.

Harris says, "You just don't think something like this is going to happen to you."

Harris isn't alone. Insurance officials say less than 50% of renters are covered by their own insurance.

Agent Randy Baker, of American Family Insurance says you can protect all of your belongings at a low cost.

Baker says, "A person who just needs to minimal amount, like a college student, you might be talking $10-$15 a month."

For renters who have a lot of property, the cost goes up.

You can get $50,000-$60,000 worth of coverage for around $40-$50 a month.

Keep in mind, renter's insurance also protects you if someone falls or gets hurt on your property.

Baker says it's the same liability that's usually covered on your homeowner's policy which is $300,000.

Keep in mind, it's a good idea whether you rent or own to have a list of all of your belongings.
